We aim at an optimal support of the Dutch government and business life by performing diagnostic tests and scientific research and by giving policy recommendations for prevention and control of a large number of (notifiable) infectious animal bacterial diseases and transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). Many of these diseases are transmissible to humans (zoonoses).
Our institute functions as a renowned national reference institute for
- Mycobacterial infections (tuberculosis)
- TSE (BSE and scrapie)
- American foulbrood
- Fish and shellfish diseases
- Antibiotic resistance
We perform diagnostics for many diseases, like leptospirosis, Q fever, psittacosis, tularaemias and some protozoal and parasital disorders.
The institute functions as international OIE reference laboratory for Campylobacter (together with Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Utrecht) and as OIE reference laboratory for Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) of horses.
