Natural products chemistry (dr. Teris A. van Beek)

Natural Products Chemistry is the science related to the investigation of naturally occurring substances that are characteristic for certain plant or animal species (secondary metabolites). Although it has strong foundations in analytical chemistry (chromatography) and synthetic chemistry, there are also often links to biological sciences (e.g., chemical ecology). The main interest in Wageningen was and is on modern analytical aspects of natural products: improvement of their isolation, purification, quantification and fast detection as well as quality control of natural extracts.

Current research interests
  • Ambient mass spectrometry
  • Quality control of essential oils
  • Gingko biloba
Current group members
Teris van Beek is gradually retiring and therefore slowly ending his research activities. There are no longer additional group members.
Biography
Teris van Beek studied pharmacy in Leiden, The Netherlands and afterwards obtained his PhD at the same university under supervision of Rob Verpoorte. In 1985 he joined Wageningen University, first as an assistant professor and from 1992 as an associate professor in the fields of phytochemistry, chemical ecology and natural products chemistry. During his time in Wageningen, he was involved in numerous projects carried out by PhD students (vide infra), MSc students, post-docs and/or technicians. In 1994-95 he spent a sabbatical at Virginia Tech on SFE/SFC under supervision of Larry Taylor. In 2000, he won the Phytochemical Society of Europe Award. Over the years, he cooperated with other research groups in Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Nepal, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and USA.
