Ongoing projects
-
Automated broiler phenotyping
April 1, 2022 - The project aims to identify, upscale and implement technologies for automated individual broiler phenotyping to improve the currently recorded and novel phenotypic traits related to health, welfare and performance. Through extensive collaboration with broiler breeding practice and technological partners, we dedicate ourselves to research towards full practical implementation. -
Netherlands East African Dairy Partnership (NEADAP2)
November 1, 2021 - By bringing together relevant dairy actors in East Africa around scalable solutions, NEADAP creates synergy on dairy development. Through collaboration on the key themes of healthy diets, milk quality, extension services, and sustainable farming, NEADAP contributes to safe and nutritious dairy products, employment, and ecologically sound food production. -
Innovations in Reproductive and Cryopreservation Technologies in Pigs and Cattle
January 1, 2021 - This project will primarily focus on the further development of cryopreservation (vitrification) protocols that will lead to good quality embryos (with high fertility rates) after freezing and thawing for both cattle and pigs. -
Functilight: Functional light provision for broilers and layer pullets to promote welfare, health and performance
January 1, 2021 - Light is an important aspect in broiler and layer pullet management, as it affects welfare including health and performance. In Functilight we develop light programs for broiler chickens and laying hens based on the needs of the chickens, promoting natural behaviour. -
Pro-ARIDES project aims at increased resilience and economic development of Sahel region
January 1, 2021 - The ten-year Pro-ARIDES project (2021-2030) is designed to contribute to increased resilience, food security and household incomes for farmers and (agro) pastoralists in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. It is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and executed by SNV, CARE-Nederland, Wageningen University & Research and KIT Royal Tropical Institute. -
mEATquality
January 1, 2021 - Sub-programme 1 (Safe primary production (food and environment)): the project identifies food safety risks and maps them with an integrated QACCP approach. In addition, WU will conduct a sensitivity analysis with regard to food fraud by means of interviews with, among others, meat processors and retailers that use the SSAFE tool. Sub-programme 2 (Improving animal health and welfare): the central question is how extensive farming can provide welfare improvements for pigs and broilers. The effects of local feed production, space, breed and pen enrichment are measured in relation to, among other things, the development of resilient animals and best practices. Sub-programme 3 (Integral sustainability of livestock farming): the ultimate goal is integrally sustainable farming systems. Technical information, best practices, economic consequences (for a clear substantiation of the revenue model) and information for consumers to enhance the social dialogue are developed. -
Roughage management in a circular dairy system: reducing nutrient losses
January 1, 2021 - The dairy sector in The Netherlands is under pressure to increase its sustainability. After the progress made inthe past 30 years regarding nutrient efficiency, further efforts are required to comply with new issues, raisedby societal concern: nitrogen emissions (ammonia), greenhouse gas emissions (methane) and closing regionalnutrient cycles (circularity). Dairy processors are working on this market shift by incorporating thesesustainability goals in their milk sourcing and quality strategy, both in their processing as well as in the primaryproduction phase. Dairy farmers therefore need to be supported to be able to make their operational andstrategic management more sustainable within their possibilities. -
Safe insect rearing on yet to be legally authorised residual streams
January 1, 2021 - Underused organic residual flows are a source of valuable nutrients. This project focuses on conversion of these flows into safe, high-quality insect-based food and feed products. Scientifically sound procedures for this purpose will help legalization of safe use of residual streams for insect rearing. -
Enlighted pigs: throwing a light on pigs’ welfare
August 1, 2020 - PhD project by Alice Scaillierez. So far, the relevance of light intensity and light spectrum for pig welfare is often neglected, as also important welfare indicators such as social and exploratory behaviour and affective states. This PhD project intends to increase our knowledge on the effect of lighting on pig welfare. -
Grassland management as a measure for the reduction of methane & ammonia emissions
April 1, 2020 - Grass is a valuable product for dairy cows; with its energy, protein and structure. In addition to the nutritional value, it has many more functions for the soil, landscape and the welfare of cows. In this project we look at the function of grass in relation to the reduction of methane and ammonia emissions.
