MSc thesis at the Human and Animal Physiology Group

Human and Animal Physiology offers MSc thesis projects which are directly involved in (ongoing) molecular and physiological research. Our research is focused on energy metabolism including intermediary metabolism as well as mitochondrial metabolism and physiology, which are central components of diet- and age-related diseases and affect organ and tissue function.

Our aims

  • To gain comprehensive mechanistic and physiological insights in energy metabolism related to health and organ functioning
  • To obtain methodology and data to substantiate the efficacy of interventions, compounds and foods to improve metabolic health

To achieve this, we perform experimental research in humans, model animals, tissues and cells, using state-of-the-art physiological, molecular, biochemical, histological and bioinformatics tools. 

Human studies 

What better way to study how muscle physiology is impacted by e.g. ageing, disease and lifestyle factors than by using human subjects? You can participate by helping to set-up and perform such studies, using primarily non-invasive techniques.

Animal studies 

How does the muscle contract? Can gene expression profiles predict a healthy gut? How do micronutrients impact heart function? You can contribute to these scientific questions in your MSc thesis.

Cell studies 

Studying the physiology of cells, how they function and respond to stimuli, is critical for our understanding of the whole body. You will perform studies in cells and cell lines from for example heart, muscle, intestine and immune system.
