Remco de Kok has a MSc. degree in aerospace engineering, but spend his PhD degree and the first ten years of his research career studying the atmospheres of worlds in our solar system and beyond. He mainly used spectroscopic remote sensing observations, in a combination with radiative transfer models, to derive properties of the atmospheres.

Subsequently, he studied the Earth and used climate models and station data on the ground to answer questions Why are some glaciers growing, when most glaciers are melting? He now works on the Earth's carbon cycle.
