dr. JHJ (Jasper) Candel

Assistant Professor

Jasper Candel finished a MSc in Earth and Environment with a specialization in Hydrogeology at Wageningen University. He completed his PhD research entitled ‘Ahead of the curve – Channel pattern formation of low-energy rivers’ in 2019 with the designation cum laude at the Physical Geography group at Utrecht University and the Soil Geography and Landscape group at Wageningen University. Jasper currently works as an assistant-professor at the SGL-group at Wageningen University.

Jasper is passionate about teaching and conducting research on the interface of geomorphology, soil geography and hydro(geo)logy to guide complex problems in the domain of land use and water management. Specific themes that he studies

  • Nature-based approaches towards climate-resilient land and water systems to support regional adaptation strategies (CASTOR, NAT, RESHAPE and NL2120 project);
  • River morphology to inform water managers in stream and river restoration projects;
  • Shallow subsurface stratigraphy linking to landscape evolution, soil formation, archaeology, groundwater flow and plant root architecture.

Jasper coordinates and teaches multiple courses on Geology, Geomorphology, Soil Geography, Landscape Geography and Hydrogeology. Besides his academic roles, he engages closely with stakeholders in Community of Practices, and frequently fulfils an advisory role in landscape regeneration projects.
