Assistant Professor

Jantsje van Loon is a researcher and lecturer in climate adaptation and nature based flood protection. Her research focuses on sustainable adaptation of flood defences by using natural processes and combining multiple functions in the flood defence zone. She is particularly interested in the co-benefits and trade-offs of integrating nature and landscape values with flood protection and its implications for management. Next to in-depth study of the value of restored and created ecosystems for nature, landscape, recreation and other services, she looks at the long-term flood-risk reduction performance of such nature based measures in a changing environment and their impact on the environment. Which natural processes are allowed or could be stimulated to enhanced in view of future flood protection? And how to maximize co-benefits and minimize trade-offs for nature and socio-economic sectors?

She is also a professor (lector) Nature Based River Management at the University of Applied Sciences van Hall Larenstein.
