I'm working as a PhD at the Horticulture and Product Physiology group of Wageningen University. I'm involved in the LED it be 50% project, in which I focus on the development of a functional-structural plant model (FSPM) of tomato grown in greenhouses, incorporating LED (inter)lighting systems. The lighting strategy is essential to optimize to the crop's need to grow optimally, with as less energy as possible. With the help of a 3D-model, I simulate the plant architecture, the lighting strategies and the consequential light distribution through the canopy. This enables me to optimize new LED lighting strategies with high potential in horticulture.
Additionally, I also focus on modelling leaf and crop photosynthesis. It is our greatest challenge to enable 3D plant models with photosynthesis features. This would then lead to a trustworthy simulation of light and light capture, plant structure and the corresponding assimilate production.
