In the Benthis project, we study the vulnerability of different benthic ecosystems in European waters and analyse the physical impact of the current fishing practices on benthic organisms and geo-chemical processes.
My role is to translate effects of fishing gears on individual organisms to the effects of fishing on the state and dynamics of the benthic ecosystem. In particular, we focus on the side effects of trawl gears (damage to non-target organisms living on the seafloor), and the implications of these side effects in a food web context. See here for a concrete example of our work in Benthis.
