Mary Greene is an Assistant Professor at the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University. She researches and teaches in the sociology of consumption, environmental governance, sustainable development, and critical social theory and research methodologies. Mary holds a master's in Environment, Politics and Society from University College London and a Ph.D. in human geography from NUI Galway. An Irish native, she comes from Galway city in the West of Ireland and moved to Wageningen in 2019.

Mary is an expert in critical geographical and sociological research on (un)sustainable consumption to which she applies interdisciplinary, participatory, and cross-cultural research methods to explore intersecting contextual processes shaping daily lifestyles and practices. Her expertise lies in investigating the intersection of consumption with broader dynamics in systems of provision. She is especially interested in the inter-relationships between socio, cultural and technological change and evolution of social practices in peoples’ everyday lives (such as food and mobility). Her work explores the role and experience of citizen-consumers in innovations towards sustainable production and consumption systems, from community-driven interventions to urban circular economy transitions.

Mary sits on the editorial advisory board of the Journal Consumption & Society and the board of the European Sociological Association's Sociology of Consumption Research Group. She also sits on the executive board of the Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative's European branch (SCORAI EUROPE) and is an active member of the Future Earth Knowledge-Action Network on Systems of Sustainable Production and Consumption
