Sjoukje a Dutch PhD candidate Physical Geography at Wageningen University. She did her BSc and MSc in Physical Geography at Utrecht University, where she focused on geomorphology. Her BSc thesis on eco-engineering effects of seedlings for biogeomorphological landscape experiments, led to a scientific publication. During her master, she focused on riverine geomorphology, particle interaction, and cryospheric processes. She spend 4 months in Svalbard to study glaciology and snow and avalanche processes, and she broadened her view by delving into the structure-from-motion UAV methodology. Her MSc thesis dealt with tsunami waves from debris flows, again leading to a scientific publication.

She decided continue the scientific journey, and is now working on hydraulic roughness from bedforms in mixed sediments in the fluvial-to-tidal transition zone. Not only does she focus on fieldwork and laboratory experiments, she also builds and employs hydrodynamic computer models to explore 1) which environmental factors in the fluvial-to-tidal transition zone impact bedform geometry and 2) to which extent bedform geometry determines reach-scale hydraulic roughness. Her PhD thesis defense is planned for May 8th 2024.

On the side, she studied floating macrolitter in the big Dutch Rivers. Finally, she is involved in science communication by creating short movies or documentaries about scientific field activities and field campaigns.
