Herman M. Vermeer (1961, Maasland, NL) graduated at Wageningen University as an Animal Scientist in 1986. He worked on housing and welfare of veal calves from 1986 to 1988 (IVO-Schoonoord, Zeist) and on reproduction in pigs from 1988 to 1990 (Research Institute for Pig Husbandry, Rosmalen) and started on housing and welfare of pigs in the same institute from 1990 to 2000. Development of group housing systems for sows, housing of finishing pigs (group size) and farrowing pens were his main projects. Since 2000 he is working at Wageningen Livestock Research (Netherlands) as scientific researcher and project leader on conventional and organic pig projects and WP-leader in several EU funded projects. He worked among others on behaviour and boar taint of non castrated finishing pigs, in conventional and organic systems. Most of his projects were carried out in close cooperation with all stakeholders in the production chain. The major theme in these national and EU projects is the understanding of the interaction between the animal and its environment.
