We started the day after breakfast at youth hostel by taking tram to ETH Zurich in the city centre. The Laboratory of Food Microbiology, headed by Prof. Martin J. Loessner, is part of the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health (IFNH) and the Department of Agriculture and Food Sciences (AGRL) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. Major research subjects of this group are microbial pathogens in food, and the corresponding bacteriophages. They perform fundamental research to develop new methods for the detection and control of food borne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens. Current topics are recombinant proteins for tagging and immobilization of bacterial cells, development and application of bacteriophages P100 to control pathogenic bacteria under the concept “Enemy of the Enemy” as well as the construction and use of genetically engineered microorganisms in manufacturing and preservation of food. During the symposium, Clint, Xiao, Augustine, Sarn, Greetje and Sachin as well as some researchers from ETH had opportunity to present and discuss about their works by giving oral presentation. Additionally, Lisa and Sachin presented their works in poster session with other variation of ETH projects. After finishing the symposium we had a nice reception drinks provided by ETH people by which a lot of discussion and new connections have been created. Afterward we moved to the city center to have a thank dinner together with the organizing committee from ETH in a traditional Swiss restaurant. We were enjoying by Swiss fondue, raclette, sausages and wine with great appreciation.
