Weblogs of employees of Wageningen Marine Research
Researchers of Wageningen Marine Research go on expeditions and conduct annual surveys at sea: in the North Sea, but also in the Caribbean, the Arctic and Antarctica. During these trips, the researchers post updates in a blog, so you can follow their findings.
Herring Acoustic Survey
Wageningen Marine Research leads the Dutch part of the North Sea herring acoustic survey. Follow the researchers in their blog!
Beam Trawl Survey (BTS)
Every summer, Wageningen Marine Research carries out a Beam Trawl Survey in the North Sea on the Tridens research vessel. The primary aim of the Beam Trawl Survey (BTS) is to supply fisheries with independent stock indices and estimates of the age-structure of North Sea plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and sole (Solea solea, Solea vulgaris).
International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS)
Annually, from the end of January to early March, the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) takes place in the North Sea, Kattegat and Skagerrak. The objective is to collect data for the assessment of fish stocks such as cod and herring and to investigate changes in the ecosystem. Researchers from Wageningen Marine Research blog from the research vessel about their findings.
Blue Whiting Survey
Every spring, colleagues of Wageningen Marine Research join the Dutch part of the annual blue whiting acoustic survey. The researchers keep a blog about their findings and experiences.
Demersal fish survey (DFS)
The Demersal Fish Survey (DFS) has been designed to target young flatfish in inshore areas like the Dutch, German and Danish coastal zone, the Dutch Wadden Sea, and the southwestern Dutch Delta. The survey has been carried out each year in September-October, since 1970.
Mackerel and horse mackerel egg survey
Every three years, Wageningen Marine Research will go out to sea for the mackerel egg survey in the North Sea. This survey is part of the international Northeast Atlantic mackerel and horse mackerel egg survey. Due to logistics, the North Sea mackerel egg survey is always conducted in the year after the large Atlantic survey. The aim of this survey is to estimate the spawning stock of mackerel and horse mackerel through their egg production.
Expedition Saba Bank 2018
From 17-25 November 2018, researchers of Wageningen Marine Research and other institutes will work together on reef monitoring on the largest coral reef of The Netherlands near Saba. The Saba Bank is an extremely rich area with very high biodiversity of fish, coral, algae and sponges.
Expedition Svalbard
This summer, again two expeditions will go to Svalbard: from 18 to 25 August to southeast Svalbard and from 29 August to 5 September to northeast Svalbard.
