Minor

RHI offers the BSc Minor Development, Policies and Globalization (WUDPG), in which you study both historical and contemporary processes of globalization and their relationship with development issues. The minor consists of two RHI courses and two PAP courses.

It is also possible to compose your own History Minor. Wageningen University does not offer an official history minor, but as a student you may use the free space in your programme to follow several history courses and to compose your own minor programme. This minor has to be approved in advance by your exam committee. You can contact our education coordinator if you are interested in a History Minor.

You could, for example, follow the course 'Sustainability and Resilience in History' in the first period; ‘Global Migration’ in the second period, ‘African History’ in period 5, and ‘Global Economic Inequality, 1500-present’ in period 6.

It is also possible to combine our courses with those of other chair groups, e.g. to create an European Union-minor. In the first period you could then follow ‘European Union: Institutions and Policies’ (PAP21806) as well as 'Agriculture, Food and Policy' (AEP-21806). In the second period you could follow 'The Making of Europe and the European Union' (RHI-52806) as well as an Open History Course (Capita Selecta).

Lastly, RHI organizes the mini-program ‘Sustainability Transitions in Past and Present’, which has been developed in collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Utrecht University (UU). Sustainability transitions pose some of the most urgent challenges to societies today as well as in the (distant) past. Transitions in energy systems, in food production, in the use of natural resources, or in the change from agrarian to urban and industrial societies always play out in longer spans of time. Students who participate in this mini-program analyse sustainability transitions of various kinds in a temporal framework. By comparing methodological and theoretical approaches, students will learn to disentangle the complexity of sustainability challenges and to synthesize various perspectives. As part of this mini-program students follow the WUR courses ‘Sustainability and Resilience in Historical Perspective’ (RHI-50806) and ‘Sustainability Transitions: Concepts, Issues and Indicators’ (ENP-23806), and on top of that they select one course from both the TU/e and UU.
