Sustainable use of the marine environment
The ecology and use of seas and oceans are under pressure due to global challenges in food security, energy production, population growth and the quest for minerals. Particularly in highly populated delta areas, the marine environment can provide room and resources for aquaculture, floating food and biomass production, fisheries, wave and wind energy and other forms of spatial use like ports and airports.
On the other hand, the marine water quality is seriously threatened by accumulating human inflicted plastic and nutrients concentrations. We work in close collaboration with Wageningen Marine Research.
