English language requirements

If you are not Dutch, from a non-Anglophone country and you have not completed your higher education with English as the language of instruction, you have to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language.

This must be done prior to the start of your project and before your PhD registration at Wageningen University. The reason is that this is needed to be registered in the Wageningen University PhD registration system which is required to be eligible for support in finding housing and obtaining your residence permit1.

Recognised certificates and the minimum required scores.

(Test results may not be older than 24 months at the moment of application.)

  • TOEFL internet-based 90, with minimum sub-score 20 (was 23) for speaking
  • IELTS (academic version) 6.5, with minimum sub-score 6.0 for speaking
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) with minimum grade C
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) (passed)
  • RATEr: This is a local test that can only be done at Wageningen University. To meet the entry requirements candidate must pass all elements.

1 In a situation where the promotor has reason to allow a PhD candidate, who has not yet met the requirements, to come to Wageningen, he/she must write a letter to motivate their reasons. This letter must accompany the PhD registration documents.
In this situation the candidate has three months to meet the proficiency requirements. To facilitate this, “Wageningen In’to Languages” offers tailor-made courses. See their pages on courses offered by in'to Languages for PhD Candidates for more information.
