Forest and Nature Conservation
The master's Forest and Nature Conservation focuses on the understanding and the management of forest- and nature areas by studying ecological, societal and management aspects. Earth and Environment has a broader scope than only forest and nature areas. Earth and Environment focuses on the natural scientific aspects of the entire ‘System Earth’ including abiotic factors such as hydrology, meteorology and soil science.
The master's Environmental Sciences provides you with insight in the characteristics and socio-economic causes of environmental pollution and degradation of our natural environment with a focus on finding solutions to prevent or limit these effects. In Earth and Environment you will come to understand the processes in the ‘critical zone’ allowing you to develop models to predict the human impact on the environment.
International Land and Water Management
The master's International Land and Water Management also contains similar aspects to the master's Earth and Environment but during this study programme you will focus on the physical, technical and socio-economic aspects of land- and water management. In Earth and Environment the focus is specifically on understanding the physical, chemical and biological processes of ‘System Earth’. Less attention is placed on the socio-economic aspects. International Land and Water Management is open to both gamma- and beta students, whereas Earth and Environment is specifically aimed at beta students.
Compare the programme with other universities
Earth Sciences (University of Amsterdam)
The study programme Earth Sciences (University of Amsterdam) mainly focuses on the hydrological and geological processes and the influence of humans and climate change. The master's Earth and Environment focuses on the entire earth system consisting of the hydrological, geological and atmospheric processes, the so-called ‘critical zone’.
Earth Surface and Water - Earth Sciences degree (University of Utrecht)
The study programme Earth Surface and Water (Utrecht University) falls under the master's degree Earth Sciences. It is in many aspects similar to the master's Earth and Environment but mainly focuses on the aquatic aspects of the ‘System Earth’. In the master's Earth and Environment you will research all earth’s interlinked processes.
Applied Earth Sciences (Delft University of Technology)
The study programme Applied Earth Sciences (Delft University of Technology) builds a bridge between the different geological, technical, societal and economic demands and hereby shares these aspects with the master's Earth and Environment study programme. However, the master's Earth and Environment applies an interdisciplinary approach to the entire ‘System Earth’ while Applied Earth Sciences distinctly focuses on its technical aspects.
Civil Engineering (Delft University of Technology)
Civil engineering focuses on dealing with environmental problems from a technical point of view while the master's Earth & Environment focuses on solving environmental problems using the natural environment from a natural sciences approach.
Earth Sciences (VU University of Amsterdam)
The study programme Earth Sciences (VU University of Amsterdam) focuses more on the geological side of ‘System Earth’ offering geology, sedimentology and Isotope-geochemistry. Earth and Environment do focus on system earth as a whole including meteorology, hydrology and soil science.
