Research Awards

The Research Awards are presented each year to promising researchers at WUR. Prizes can be earned in four categories: Research paper of the year, Team effort of the year, Transdisciplinary research of the year, and Supervisor of the year. The Research Awards are organised by the Wageningen Graduate Schools. Wageningen Graduate Schools and University Fund Wageningen jointly make the awards possible.

These are the winners of the Research Awards 2025

Research Paper of the year : Ralph van Zwieten

This category spotlights breakthrough research that is published in the past academic year. Nominations are judged based on the creativity, originality, scientific rigor and scientific/societal impact. Ralph van Zwieten won the award for the paper entitled “Mimicking natural deterrent strategies in plants using adhesive spheres”.

Transdisciplinary research of the year: Kathleen Uyttewaal

In this category, we honor transformative research that merges rigorous inquiry with practical solutions. Nominations are judged based on the involvement of stakeholders, different scientific disciplines and the degree of interaction between scientific and practical insights. Kathleen Uyttewaal won the award for her research on “Linking past, present and future pathways to fire adaptation: a transdisciplinary approach in Mediterranean Europe”.

Team effort of the year: EPS postdoc council

With this category we are celebrating extraordinary teams that showcase outstanding collaboration, synergy, and remarkable achievements making a real impact.

Supervisor of the year: Erik Poelman and Johan Schrama

In this category, we honor exceptional mentors who inspire, lead, and empower the next generation of researchers! These nominees set the standard in leadership, career development, and inclusivity. The winners of 2025 share first place.
