Social safety

Social safety is a top priority at WUR. We create an inspiring and safe working and studying environment at WUR by looking out for each other. Together, we stand for a positive working and studying climate in which we treat each other with respect and employees, PhD candidates, and students feel safe to fully develop their talents. It is essential that we are able to talk to each other and point things out when things are not going well.

“I consider social safety, just like integrity, to be a prerequisite for a culture in which people excel, at both WU and WR.”
Sjoukje Heimovaara
President of the Executive Board

Social safety program

Since 2022, the social safety program (‘Oog voor elkaar’ or ‘Looking out for each other’) at WUR has been actively working to strengthen and accelerate social safety at WUR. The activities from the first program (until the end of 2024) have now been completed. However, working on social safety requires ongoing attention. The follow-up program until the end of 2026 therefore identifies new pillars and actions, building on the previous program and in line with the KNAW report Social Safety in Dutch Academia. The follow-up program focuses, among other things, on the support structure at WUR, specific key roles (such as managers), further development of the social safety contact point, and specific activities aimed at employees, lecturers, students, and PhD candidates.

Code of Conduct for Social Safety

In the ‘Code of Conduct for Social Safety’, you can read more about how WUR supports a safe and inclusive working and studying environment and what the organization does to achieve this and expects from students and staff.
