From cars galore.. to sustainable mobility

We are working to improve options for sustainable and user-friendly travel at WUR for both students, employees and guests. We want to encourage further reductions of travel emissions which make up a large part of WUR’s CO2 footprint.

Transport emissions totalled up to 47% of the total WUR carbon footprint in 2019. WUR’s ambition is to decrease CO2 emissions related to all WUR transport by at least 2% each year. Therefore, we keep on encouraging sustainable transport options. To facilitate more sustainable travel, WUR introduced Mobility as a Service (MaaS). This facilitates travel by the use of an app where employees can plan, organise and book their trip on a pay-as-you-go basis. MaaS includes three transportation options: public transportation is integrated in the travel advice app, shared electric cars and bicycles are offered on campus as well as a pool of minibuses and transport vans for larger groups. The shared services will eventually become available to students and other businesses on and around campus. 

WUR’s mobility initiatives in a nutshell

  • ..work flexibly and remote
  • ..ride a bicycle to work and has a bicycle scheme in place for staff to buy a bicycle
  • ..go for video conferencing
  • ..travel by public transport in the Netherlands and within Europe

On campus we contribute to sustainable mobility by…

  • ..an elaborate network of bicycle paths (some of which are bio-based) and bicycle parking near buildings
  • ..installing electric charging points for electric cars, e-bikes, and e-scooters
  • ..choosing suppliers that are powered by electricity or green gas
  • ..reducing the frequency of large delivery vehicles through more efficient deliveries
