About the WURth-while programma
The WURth-while programme of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) was established in 2017 to support refugee students with an academic background. This programme is aimed at students who are currently waiting for a legal status or who have obtained a (temporary) residence permit within the past two years. Through WURth-while, these students are given the opportunity to participate in various courses offered by WUR.
Integration, keeping up knowledge, and combating loneliness
With WURth-while, we aim to provide refugees with the opportunity to further develop themselves and actively participate in society. This contributes to the well-being of both the individual refugee and society as a whole. Research shows that exclusion reduces opportunities for participation in the labour market and other societal roles in the long term. Therefore, WURth-while strives to integrate refugees by keeping them actively involved in their field of study and by connecting them with students and professors in Wageningen.
Participants in WURth-while confirm that they experience various benefits from being involved in and feeling welcome at the university. For example, WURth-while helps newcomers make constructive use of their waiting period and provides them with a valuable bridge to a new future.
“Because of the war in Syria, I had not studied for five years. Thanks to WURth-while, I was able to take courses and prepare for a master's programme, which I later completed. It changed my life.”
