Biotech Dialogue: Who owns the seed?

In short
Activity- Wednesday 11 November 2026
- 16.00 - 18.00 hrs
- Omnia Wageningen Campus, Momentumzalen
How can we protect a grower’s investment without denying the next generation of growers and farmers access to genetic material and new technologies? In this dialogue, we explore the role that seed patents (can) play in our food system and seek to strike the right balance of power.
Plant breeders’ rights have traditionally offered protection for new varieties, whilst other breeders have been able to use these varieties for further breeding. With the advent of new genomic techniques and the increasing use of patents, the question arises as to whether that balance is shifting.
What does this mean for large and small breeding companies? And for farmers who want access to a diverse range of varieties? How do we design a system in which innovation is rewarded, but genetic progress is not denied to others?
This afternoon, we will explore different perspectives on the balance between protection, access and further innovation. We invite scientists, stakeholders, and interested citizens to also explore the role that breeders, farmers, companies, research institutions, and civil society organisations can play in this regard.
Biotech Dialogue series

For who
With the ‘Biotech Dialogue’ series, WUR invites everyone to join in exploring the role that biotechnology can play in creating a more sustainable, healthier and fairer food system. After all, biotechnological innovations (such as NGTs for plant breeding) can help tackle major societal challenges relating to food security, health, climate and sustainability. But they also present dilemmas and raise new questions. Join the discussion and have your say.
