Summary
Citizens often know what is needed in their community or in the healthcare system to live healthy lives. By involving them in developing and implementing solutions, initiatives can better align with their needs, experiences, and knowledge. This dissertation examines how citizen participation in health promotion can contribute to this. To this end, various forms of participation were examined, ranging from local to regional matters and from professionally initiated to citizen-led initiatives.
The research shows that citizen participation is not a given and that the way in which participation is organized matters. Key factors include opportunities for influence, recognition of the value of citizen participation, equal collaboration and communication, and visible results. At the same time, participation can benefit citizens themselves, such as by providing new knowledge, skills, and connections. Finally, the dissertation demonstrates how participation can be monitored and evaluated in a flexible and tailored manner, allowing those involved to learn, make adjustments, and increase the impact along the way.
