The oat collection mainly includes about spring types and only a handful of winter types.
Composition
The oat collection mainly includes about spring types and only a handful of winter types. The collection of cultivated oats, Avena sativa, consists for one half of cultivars, for a quarter of breeding lines and an for even smaller part of landraces. Additionally, there are a limited number of accessions of five other species: A. barbata, A. brevis, A. orientalis, A. sterilis, and A. strigosa.
The collection is largely of European and North American origin. Only a limited number of accessions are from the centers of origin of oat, the near east and the Mediterranean sea. The collection also includes accessions from the Netherlands, uncluding landraces such as Zwarte President, Naakte Haver uit Overasselt, and Gele Timmermans.
