Forest and Nature Conservation Policy

The Forest and Nature Conservation Policy group, led by Georg Winkel, focuses on the political, social-economic and cultural dimensions of forests and nature. It covers current themes such as deforestation, forest transitions, climate change, biodiversity conservation and landscape management in the global North and South.
Research themes
Political sphere
This research theme addresses the ‘politics of governance’ and explores how major paradigms, discourses, institutions and interests play out in policy making and what impacts these policies have.
Market sphere
This theme analyses the interplay of markets and policies, including informal practices and rules, along forest landscape related value chains.
Society sphere
In this theme, we explore the ways humans enact their relationships with forests and nature and the implications for forest and nature governance and management.
Education

Education by Forest and Nature Conservation Policy
The Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group offers a wide range of courses in different educational programmes such as the bachelor's programme. Forest and Nature Management (BBN), master's programme Forest and Nature Conservation (MFN), the Sustainable Diplomacy track (SDD) and various PhD courses and opportunities.
Publications & Projects
Our research focuses on understanding interactions between people and nature in a broad sense and with a specific focus on forests. We aim to generate knowledge to enrich the social-environmental sciences and to inspire society to tackle major environmental and socioeconomic challenges.

Georg Winkel is a forester, social scientist and environmentalist with a keen research interest on human nature interactions, a particular focus on forest and conservation policy, and a desire to help to create better future policies through critically analysing the current ones.
