Nutrition and Disease

The Nutrition and Disease Group of Ellen Kampman focuses on cardiometabolic diseases, cancer, obesity treatment and women’s diseases. Our societal mission is to decrease the risk of (chronic) disease and improve the health of those with a disease through better nutrition. Our scientific mission is to conduct interdisciplinary human observational and experimental research on nutrition in disease aetiology, during treatment and for prognosis.
Research themes
Cancer
We study the influence of diet and other lifestyle factors in the development of cancer as well their role during and after cancer treatment.
Nutrition and cardiometabolic diseases
We investigate the role of dietary intake and eating patterns in the prevention and management of cardiometabolic diseases, and their contribution to the underlying biological mechanisms.
Chronic bowel diseases
In our research group, we study the effect of nutrition and physical activity on the course of chronic bowel diseases and on the gut microbiome.
Obesity treatment
We focus on optimising nutritional care for patients with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery, before and after the procedure.
Education

Education by Nutrition and Disease
Our group is highly committed to provide high quality education closely related to our research themes. Together with the Chair ‘Global Nutrition’, we are responsible for education on epidemiological and public health concepts and methods.
Publications & Projects
We conduct observational epidemiological studies, experimental studies in individuals at (high-)risk or with (preclinical) disease, clinically oriented research and meta-analyses. We publish the results of our projects in scientific journals.
