Soil Biology

The Soil Biology group, led by Jan-Willem van Groenigen, regards soil life as key to sustainable (agro)ecosystems. We study the role of the soil biota in ecosystem processes at a range of scales; from life in a single soil ped to the role of soil biota in climate change at a global scale. We have state-of-the-art laboratories which facilitate this research, engaging in both developmental research through PhD, MSc, and funded projects and routine analyses for external clients.
Research themes
Fertile soils
This research theme focuses on how soil biota shape the functioning and productivity of agricultural systems.
Functional soil biodiversity
This theme is about research that aims to understand how the richness and community composition of soil biota is coupled to ecosystem functioning in (agro)ecosystems.
Soil biology and land management
This theme deals with the impacts of agricultural management on soil biota and soil quality.
Soils in a changing climate
This theme relates to what may be the most pertinent environmental threat facing humanity: climate change as a result of man-made greenhouse gas.
Education

Education by this Chair Group
The Soil Biology Group participates in a variety of BCs and MSc programmes such as Biology, Climate Studies, and Resilient Farming and Food Systems. We coordinate and contribute to 20+ courses, and our professors and lecturers supervise students during their MSc internship, thesis, and PhD projects as well.
Publications & Projects
Our aim is to advance and share knowledge, through research and education, on how soil life can improve the quality and functioning of soils in agroecosystems around the world. We publish the outcomes of our research projects in scientific journals, professional journals, scientific and popular books, and proceedings.

Chair Holder
Jan-Willem van Groenigen is professor and chair of the Soil Biology Group. His main research aim is to understand cycles of elements, and how soil organisms affect these cycles. "I am an enthusiastic teacher. It is my strong conviction that at a university, excellent teaching begets excellent research, and excellent research begets excellent teaching." So far, Jan-Willen has published over 120 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals as author or co-author and appeared in Dutch newspapers and television.
