Soil Chemistry

As Soil Chemistry, with chair Rob Comans, we study soil chemical processes at the very small scale to better understand soil functions at larger scales. By developing, modelling and implementing soil chemical knowledge, we contribute to the sustainable use of our soils.
Research themes
Soil fertility
We study how the chemical processes in our soils influence the availability of plant nutrients.
Environmental geochemistry
We study the fate and behaviour of contaminants and nutrients in soils and sediments.
Soil carbon
We study the behaviour and the many roles of carbon in the soil system.
Education

Education by Soil Chemistry
At the Soil Chemistry Group we care about education and therefore we coordinate and contribute to multiple courses on BSc and MSc level. Apart from our courses, it is also possible to do your internship, thesis or research practice in our group.
Publications & Projects
The fundamental research at Wageningen University & Research is conducted by chair groups. Each chair group, under leadership of a professor, has its own area of expertise. All chair groups share a common research domain: healthy food and living environment. Wageningen University & Research is comprised of one faculty that is divided into five departments.
Projects of Soil Chemistry cover various topics in its own area of expertise. Outcomes of these studies are regularly published in scientific journals. You can find all publications and projects in Wageningen Library.
Highlighted publications
- A density-based method to objectively quantify earthworm activity
- Conventional and organic farms with more intensive management have lower soil functionality
- Impact of soil inoculation on crop residue breakdown and carbon and nitrogen cycling in organically and conventionally managed agricultural soils
Chair Holder
Rob Comans is professor and chair of Soil Chemistery. His research focus is on organic matter and tropical soil.
