Who is this course for?
This masterclass is designed for two groups:
Advanced MSc, PhD candidates, post-docs and researchers studying automatic phenotyping
Technical experts in breeding companies, greenhouse technology & vertical farming companies, sensor and robotics companies
Both groups use or plan to use image analysis. If you have doubts about whether you belong to the target group or have enough relevant basic knowledge, please don't hesitate to contact us.
We offer two types of scholarships for outstanding students affiliated to Chinese and European universities or research institutes who would like to participate in this masterclass. Download the brochure for details and the application procedure.
Learning outcomes
- Understand modern plant phenotyping workflows.
- Apply image processing and segmentation techniques.
- Explain machine learning and deep learning methods for plant analysis.
- Understand UAV, LiDAR and spectral imaging applications.
- Explain photosynthesis and plant metabolism modeling concepts
- Build basic functional-structural plant models using GroIMP.
- Understand greenhouse climate and plant factory control systems.
- Analyze environmental interactions in controlled environment agriculture.
- Connect sensing, modeling and control into digital twin concepts.
- Translate research concepts into practical greenhouse and vertical farming applications.
Programme details
The next generation of agriculture will increasingly rely on the integration of sensing, AI, plant physiology, modeling and intelligent environmental control. Advanced phenotyping and plant modelling technologies are rapidly becoming essential tools for breeding, crop optimization, greenhouse production and autonomous plant factories.
This Sino-European masterclass brings together leading scientists and experts from Wageningen University & Research (WUR), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and international partner institutions to offer a unique interdisciplinary programme at the intersection of:
Plant phenotyping
Image analysis and machine learning
Deep learning and computer vision
Functional-Structural Plant Models (FSPM)
Photosynthesis and metabolism modeling
Greenhouse and plant factory climate control
Digital twins for controlled environment agriculture
Autonomous greenhouse systems
The programme combines lectures, practical assignments, laboratory visits, excursions and real-world innovation challenges in a highly interactive international learning environment. For programme details, please download the brochure.
Chinese Academy of Sciences
This programme is developed in cooperation with Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). CAS is China's highest academic institution and national think tank in science and technology, and the national strategic force in basic research and integrated high-tech development. CAS integrates research institutes, academic divisions, and educational institutions into a unified system, with research covering nearly all areas of the natural sciences. It currently comprises 108 research institutes, two universities, six academic divisions, 908 CAS Members, as well as 173 international CAS Members from more than 30 countries. The two universities under CAS are the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), which together enroll nearly 10,000 undergraduate students and over 98,000 graduate students.
