This course gave me the scientific insights to back up my grower’s intuition.

Milan Kula, Head Grower at Farma Bezdínek. He followed the Summer School Greenhouse Horticulture and shares his experience with us.

As head grower of 15 hectares of greenhouses in the Czech Republic, Milan is responsible for producing high-quality tomatoes without the use of pesticides. “We have been producing with zero residues for four years now, which is a challenge. I joined the Summer School Greenhouse Horticulture because I constantly strive to improve and expand my knowledge.’’

Visiting Dutch growers several times a year, Milan knew that the Netherlands is at the forefront of greenhouse knowledge.

“I wanted to compare my seven years of experience with the latest scientific theory. Here, I finally understood the science behind what I was doing intuitively.”

One of the most valuable outcomes was gaining new arguments for discussions back home. “For example, we always debated CO₂ use. Thanks to the lectures, I now know it’s better to talk about concentration instead of kilograms per square metre. That helps me show how to improve both yield and quality.” He also gained insights into LED lighting and light spectrum, which he is already applying in a Slovakian greenhouse project.

Beyond the technical knowledge, Milan valued the passion and openness of the lecturers.

“They really tried to understand our specific conditions and gave practical answers. The only downside? Two weeks felt too short, I wish it were three!”

Would he recommend the Summer School?

“Absolutely. It’s perfect not only for experienced growers but also for junior agronomists. In just two weeks, they can gain the overview that took me years to build. It helps you ask the right questions earlier, and that’s the key to becoming a better grower.”
