The Hackathon

We need you to help connect farmers, fishers, transporters, and hospitality entrepreneurs into an efficient, circular food system, while inspiring tourists to actively choose local and sustainable dishes. During the Coastal Food Hackathon, you will work in a multidisciplinary team to develop a storytelling-driven campaign that brings local food to life, strengthens regional food chains, and turns a healthy local menu into an experience people remember and choose.

Organisers

  • Delta Climate Center
  • Scalda
  • HZ University of Applied Sciences
  • Wageningen University & Research

What is at stake?

Zeeland is shaped by the sea, agriculture, and a rich food culture. Local fish, crops, and craftsmanship define the region’s identity, yet many of these products never truly reach tourists. Zeeland-based organisation Local Smakelaars aims to change this by making local food chains successful within the recreational sector, such as beach pavilions.

Who can join?

This hackathon is open to all Bachelor’s and Master’s students. It is especially relevant for students with an interest in Tourism, Food, Landscape Architecture and Planning, Entrepreneurship, Communication, Health and Life Sciences, Consumer Studies, Economics of Sustainability, Development and Rural Innovation, and Environmental Sciences.

What is there for you?

  • Fully arranged 3.5-day Hackathon in beautiful Zeeland, including transport, meals, hotel, excursion, and coaching
  • Unique accommodation in an ambient restored church
  • Working together in multi-level teams with students from Scalda and HZ University of Applied Sciences
  • Skill development in challenge-based learning and pitching
  • Feedback from an expert jury panel
  • Chance at winning a €500 prize
