Resistant Aspergillus fumigatus more commonly found in greenhouse and bulb-growing regions
WUR researcher Eveline Snelders and two PhD candidates have mapped the spread of the (drug-resistant) fungus Aspergillus fumigatus across the Netherlands. While the fungus is present ubiquitous in the air, the resistant variant was found more often in greenhouse horticulture and flower-bulb regions.

Keuzegids 2026: WUR proud of second place in the Keuzegids

Ecological and legal framework for the wolf population in the Netherlands now available
Clear ecological and legal favourable reference values for the wolf population in the Netherlands are now in place. This framework is set out in a research report by Wageningen University & Research (WUR), in collaboration with Tilburg University and the Belgian Research Institute for Nature and Forest, commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN). The study shows that the Netherlands are legally required to contribute between 23 and 56 wolf packs. WUR emphasises that, when developing wolf policy, not only ecological and legal aspects matter, but also the social and socio-economic consequences for, among others, agriculture, recreation, and housing, which have not yet been studied. These aspects were not included in this research.

A time machine for plant growth: BABETTE
Researcher Johan Bucher (WUR), together with colleagues Matthijs Brouwer, Rick Hendriksen, Richard Visser, and Gerrit Polder, developed a modular platform called BABETTE, designed to capture the development and growth of plants in great detail. BABETTE is more than just a camera system; it is a fully equipped growth chamber that enables researchers to analyse plant development in a controlled environment.

WUR researcher Luca Bordes: ‘Risk of avian influenza infection in pets remains very low’
Researchers at Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR), part of Wageningen University & Research, have confirmed the avian influenza virus in a deceased kitten. It is the first time that an avian influenza infection has been confirmed in a pet in the Netherlands.

Emissions from global wildfires far higher than previously thought
The total emissions of greenhouse gases and airborne particles caused by wildfires are almost 70% higher than previously assumed. Researchers at Wageningen University & Research discovered this in a long-term study conducted in collaboration with NASA, BeZero Carbon, and American universities in Maryland and Irvine, California.
