Detmer Sipkema appointed Personal Professor of Marine Microbiology

- prof.dr.ir. D (Detmer) Sipkema
- Associate professor Marine Microbial Ecology
Detmer Sipkema has been appointed Personal Professor of Marine Microbiology within the Microbiology Chair Group, with effect from 1 July 2026. In this role, he will focus on the ecology and chemical interactions of marine organisms and the microbes with which they coexist. He is particularly passionate about discovering and applying novel bioactive compounds derived from (microbial) marine life.
The ocean is full of unknown chemical compounds that could form the basis of new medicines. Exploring this hidden diversity has long fascinated microbiologist Detmer Sipkema.
Chemical communication in the ocean
Sipkema’s fascination with marine life began early in his career. During his PhD research on marine sponges, he discovered that many of the bioactive compounds that protect sponges are not produced by the sponges themselves, but by the bacteria living in symbiosis with it. This finding sparked his enduring interest in microbiology. “Scientists believe that these bioactive molecules are part of a chemical language through which marine organisms, such as sponges, crustaceans and seaweeds, communicate with one another,” says Sipkema. “Yet we still know remarkably little about the functions of most of these compounds.”
Therefore, his research addresses two fundamental questions: what roles do these compounds play in nature, and how can we benefit from them? Many of these molecules are entirely new to science and show promise as building blocks for antibiotics, antiviral drugs and cancer therapies. Sipkema’s research focuses both on unravelling these natural functions and on exploring their potential applications.
To make new discoveries, he focuses on the deep sea. “The deep sea remains one of the least explored ecosystems on Earth,” says Sipkema. “It is likely to harbour many previously unknown microbes and chemical compounds.” By mapping this diversity, he aims not only to support the development of new applications but also to improve our understanding and conservation of vulnerable marine ecosystems.
About Detmer Sipkema
Detmer Sipkema began his academic career in Wageningen, where he obtained his BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Bioprocesstechnology. During his doctoral research on marine sponges, his scientific interests shifted towards microbiology. Following his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) and at CEAB-CSIC in Spain, where he further investigated the role of microorganisms in marine ecosystems. Over the years, he has developed an interdisciplinary research programme at the interface of microbiology, chemistry and marine ecology.
