Ketan Ganar wins Research Award for the best scientific article.

Tick bites can transmit pathogens that cause severe tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease. In this study, Ganar and co-authors investigated the fundamental mechanism by which ticks adhere to their host. They demonstrated that the phase transition of glycine-rich proteins from tick saliva is a key process in the formation of the tick’s cement-like adhesive. Ganar is one of the co–first authors, together with Manali Nandy, a former postdoctoral researcher at PCC, and Polina Turbina, a former MSc student at PCC. The project was led by Dr. Siddharth Deshpande, and he continues to further explore the potential of glycine-rich protein in biomedical applications. 

On behalf of the first authors, Ganar delivered a three-minute pitch highlighting the key findings of the research and its potential implications for combating Lyme disease. Owing to the innovation and potential impact of these findings, the paper was chosen by the audience as the recipient of the Best Research Paper Award ahead of the other two nominated articles. He was later honored again during the 108th Dies Natalis of Wageningen University & Research celebration. The award includes a €2,500 prize and a replica of The Wageningen Tree, a sculpture by Sjoerd Buisman.

Ganar continues his scientific career as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, while remaining affiliated with Wageningen University & Research as a guest employee.
