Vivianne Vleeshouwers, associate professor of plant breeding at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), has been elected an EMBO Member. The election is an international recognition of her scientific contribution to plant breeding, molecular plant biology and research into plant diseases.
EMBO Membership is a lifetime recognition for researchers who excel in the life sciences. According to EMBO, election as an EMBO Member recognises scientific excellence and outstanding achievements. The organisation brings together more than 2,100 leading researchers in Europe and beyond.
In her research, Vleeshouwers focuses on how potatoes can be made more resistant to various plant diseases. Examples include potato late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, which has threatened potato cultivation worldwide for more than 150 years, and Stolbur, an emerging problem caused by a phytoplasma bacterium transmitted by insects.
Vleeshouwers studies wild potato species that are naturally resistant to pathogens. She also investigates how different layers of defence in the plant can be used more effectively. This knowledge contributes to the development of more robust potato varieties and to crop production that is less dependent on crop protection products. In this way, her work supports the need for more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.
“This election is a great honour,” says Vivianne Vleeshouwers. “EMBO brings together scientists from the molecular life sciences across disciplines, borders and generations, and stands for the diversity and connection that drive science forward. I look forward to becoming part of this community of inspiring researchers and to contributing together to innovative science.”
EMBO Members contribute, among other things, to the direction and activities of EMBO programmes, for example through councils, committees, advisory boards and review processes.
