Biography

Biography

I am an interdisciplinary researcher, with a political and environmental science background, with a keen interest in marine socio-ecological systems. I am currently working in the NWO ECOAMARE project, where my PhD focuses on offshore wind energy and its (cumulative) ecological impact on the (Dutch) North Sea.

My PhD research explores both the fields of ecology and policy to gain greater understanding on how an ecosystem-based approach to management can more effectively be applied to the changing human-use and environmental status of the North Sea. More specifically, I place focus on ecological knowledge; (a) what knowledge about ecological impact of offshore windfarms is and is not being used in policy-making, (b) how concepts are used to describe the ecosystem status and human-use in policy, (c) and to what extent the cumulative ecological impact of human-use is taken into account within policy given the planned large-scale expansion of offshore wind energy.

In the past I have worked on norm localization of blue economy development, environmental risk analysis, and human-wildlife conflict. I'm also an avid outdoor enthusiast, currently spending much of my time wave- and kitesurfing, thanks to my conveniently located office on Texel.
