CM (Corien) Voorburg, PhD

Corien has studied Biomedical sciences at University Utrecht. Cell biology and virology became her favourite courses and especially the continuous “battle” between pathogens and the defence system intrigued. After her graduation as Master of Science, she switched fields from mammalian viruses to plant viruses when starting her PhD studies in the Laboratory of Virology at Wageningen University under supervision of Dr Richard Kormelink, Prof. Yuling Bai and Prof. Dr Monique van Oers. During her PhD studies she investigated the molecular mechanism behind the resistance gene Ty-1 and the effect of viral encoded RNA silencing suppressors on this resistance.

Her curiosity and fascination about plant viruses remain a driving force for Corien. She joined Wageningen Research, Business unit Greenhouse Horticulture and Flower Bulbs right after her PhD. She is involved in several projects focusing on plant viruses, baculoviruses (viruses which infect caterpillars) and disinfection of recirculation water.
