Program Developer "Climate Resilient Cities" (jointly with AMS institute)
Biography
Dr. Gaby S. Langendijk is Program Developer Climate Resilient Cities at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS institute), seconded from Wageningen University & Research (WUR). She is a climate scientist and programme leader working at the intersection of cities, climate change, climate adaptation, climate services, and urban planning, with a strong focus on bridging climate science and real-world decision-making.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences (minor in Development Studies) from the University of Amsterdam and an interdisciplinary Master’s degree in Climate Studies from Wageningen University & Research. She obtained her PhD on climate information for cities, focusing on high-resolution climate modelling, climate data analysis, and translating complex climate information into actionable insights for urban decision-making and adaptation planning.
Gaby has more than a decade of experience in international climate research and innovation. She worked at Deltares on EU Horizon projects developing climate services and decision-support tools for cities in Europe. Her work included research on adaptation pathways planning and extending these approaches towards mitigation and the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as co-developing neighbourhood-scale adaptation pathways in Maastricht within an NWO KIN project.
Prior to her PhD, she worked as Science Officer at the UN World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), coordinating international scientific collaboration on global climate change research. Building on her doctoral research, she initiated and leads an international WCRP research initiative on improving the representation of urban areas in climate models with a global consortium of more than 30 partners worldwide.
Gaby has taken leadership roles in national and international research and innovation initiatives on climate resilience, climate services, and urban transitions, including NWO and EU Horizon programmes. She has authored more than 30 scientific publications and numerous policy reports. She is actively engaged in the international climate community, including participation in UNFCCC COP meetings, and serves as a member of the WCRP My Climate Risk initiative and the Governing Board of Future Earth.

The Currents of Imagination project, funded by the German VW Foundation, explores new ways of envisioning and co-creating resilient urban water futures in the face of climate change. Bringing together expertise in AI, urban climate modelling, adaptive pathways planning, cultural science, and the arts, the project investigates the potential of AI as a creative tool for co-design, connecting researchers, artists, urban planners, policymakers, and citizens. Through artistic residencies, participatory workshops, field research, and experimental design, it develops new ways of understanding and responding to water-related challenges such as flooding, drought, and sea-level rise. In collaboration with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and an international network of academic, civic, and municipal partners, Currents of Imagination demonstrates how transdisciplinary collaboration can bridge science, technology, creativity, and public engagement to shape resilient urban water futures.
