As Head of Data Science & AI at Wageningen Food Safety Research, Bas leads a diverse, international team of 25 researchers using AI for a safer food system. Our work focuses on explainable and trustworthy AI for chemical, biological, and image data - bridging science, technology, and policy.

Bas sets strategic direction, fosters team growth, and contributes to several European research consortia on AI in food safety, serving as coordinator or Work Package Leader in multiple projects.

With over a decade of deep learning experience, Bas helps researchers, policymakers, and companies turn complex models into clear, actionable insights that strengthen food safety and public trust.
