dr.ir. JGA (Jerry) van den Berge

I am a post-doc researcher at the Water Resources Management (WRM) group looking at river restoration projects from a social-environmental justice perspective. I am engaged in the EU-Biodiversa project RiVIVE and I am collaborating with the Riverhood/ River Commons researchers. I obtained my PhD in October 2024 researching Social Movements' struggle against privatization of water in Europe. My thesis is called: “Water is a public good, not a commodity!” – Social movements’ struggles and strategies against privatization of water services. (Available at: https://edepot.wur.nl/662007)

The thesis is based on the “Right2Water” movement that campaigned to halt water privatization efforts by the European Commission (in beginnings of the second decade this century), and used the human right to water as a tool. In that period I was working as policy officer in EPSU (European federation of Public Services Unions), dealing with the water, energy and waste sectors and policies. I coordinated the “Right2Water” European Citizens' Initiative (ECI). As water and nature cannot be seperated from life, I am committed to bridge social and environmental justice struggles. As an "activist" I have brought together trade unions and other NGO’s working on water, energy, and climate (justice) issues, a strenght that I bring as "activist scholar" to the academic community. Next to this I am an ambassador for the Blue Community network. 

Ik ben postdoctoraal onderzoeker bij de onderzoeksgroep Waterbeheer (WRM) en bestudeer rivierherstelprojecten vanuit een sociaal-milieurechtvaardig perspectief. Ik ben betrokken bij het EU-Biodiversa-project RiVIVE en werk samen met de onderzoekers van Riverhood/River Commons. In oktober 2024 promoveerde ik op mijn proefschrift over de strijd van sociale bewegingen tegen de privatisering van water in Europa. Mijn proefschrift heet: "Water is een publiek goed, geen handelswaar!" – De strijd en strategieën van sociale bewegingen tegen de privatisering van waterdiensten. Het proefschrift is gebaseerd op de "Right2Water"-beweging, die campagne voerde om de privatisering van water door de Europese Commissie (begin jaren 2000) tegen te houden en het mensenrecht op water als instrument gebruikte. In die periode werkte ik als beleidsmedewerker bij EPSU (Europese federatie van vakbonden voor de publieke sector), waar ik me bezighield met de sectoren water, energie en afval en het bijbehorende beleid. Ik coördineerde het Europese burgerinitiatief "Right2Water". Omdat water en natuur onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn met het leven, zet ik me in om sociale en milieurechtvaardigheidsstrijden met elkaar te verbinden. Als activist heb ik vakbonden en andere ngo's die zich bezighouden met water-, energie- en klimaatkwesties (en klimaatrechtvaardigheid) samengebracht. Deze kracht breng ik als activistisch wetenschapper mee naar de academische wereld. Daarnaast ben ik ambassadeur voor het "Blue Community netwerk.
