dr.ir. MD (Maarten) Verhoeven

Maarten is a biotechnology scientist with experience spanning academia and industry. During his PhD he focused on lignocellulosic bioethanol production using engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae. He then worked as a scientist at the DSM, contributing to projects on bio-based materials, flavors, and enzymes using microbial cell factories. prior to working at WFBR he was a NWO Rubicon laurate at Aalborg University, where he investigated genetic engineering approaches for bacteria in wastewater treatment to enable micro-pollutant conversion.

Currently, Maarten leading the Microbial Cell Factories expertise group, with a personal fassination for microbial physiology and process optimization for industrial fermentation. His goal is to design innovative bioprocesses that support the transition to a circular bio-based economy or result in sustainable, healthy and tasty fermented foods.
