Biography

Liesbeth de Schutter is researcher at the Urban Economics Group of Wageningen University & Research. She graduated from Wageningen University and studied Ecological Economics at the Vienna University of Economics & Business. Her interdisciplinary research bridges social and ecological sustainability challenges in urban food systems and bioeconomy. The main focus of her research concerns the relations and interdependencies among cities, peri-urban and rural regions, and how actors in these heterogeneous regions can explore and cooperate in sustainable bioeconomy transitions that satisfy people’s needs within safe environmental boundaries. Liesbeth combines system thinking with quantitative analysis and participatory approaches at the sub-national level, in order to engage multiple actor groups in a societal transformation oriented at broader – i.e. beyond GDP - welfare.
