My name is Remco Pieters, and I work as an Education and Research Technician within the Experimental Zoology group (EZO) at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). With a background in Applied Physics (Eindhoven University of Technology, 2011), I operate at the interface of science, engineering, and practical implementation.

Within EZO, I am responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratories. A major part of my work involves translating scientific research questions into technically feasible and reliable experimental setups. Together with researchers and students, I translate research objectives into functional requirements, technical specifications, and practical designs, while continuously considering feasibility, safety, and compliance with relevant regulations.

Experimental setups in EZO are almost always custom-made. They often involve the integration of advanced equipment such as (ultra) high-speed video cameras, real-time 3D tracking systems, and all kind of sensors, combined with custom-designed mechanical constructions, lighting systems, climate control, and control software or electronics. I am involved throughout the entire process, from concept development and technical design to assembly, installation, and commissioning. This requires close collaboration with researchers, suppliers, the university workshop, and other technical specialists within WUR.

An important aspect of my role is selecting equipment and integrating a wide range of components into a single, well-functioning system. As research becomes increasingly digitalized, I am also involved in connecting research equipment to the IT infrastructure within EZO and WUR. In this capacity, I act as a link between researchers, technical facilities, and IT support, particularly in the areas of data acquisition, storage, processing, and system integration.

I also support research projects during the proposal stage by selecting equipment, obtaining quotations, and preparing budgets. In addition, I advise on the acquisition, replacement, and integration of new equipment to improve the efficiency and future readiness of research facilities.

Alongside my technical responsibilities, I assist with the onboarding of new staff members, students, and researchers and serve as a point of contact for operational and technical questions. I also coordinate the analyst team, mentor junior support staff, and monitor the progress of project-related activities.

My technical expertise includes (ultra) high-speed video, real-time 3D tracking, X-ray imaging, and micro-CT. In addition, I manage several imaging facilities within the Shared Research Facilities of WUR. Safety is an essential aspect of my work, and I therefore serve as a Radiation Protection Office and a Emergency Response Team Leader (ploegleider BHV).

What motivates me is developing technical solutions that enable scientific research. The combination of physics, engineering, creativity, and hands-on implementation makes my work within Experimental Zoology both challenging and highly rewarding.
