Senior researcher Nutrient Management, Circular Fertilisers & Biobased Materials

Biography

Biography

Kimo van Dijk works in the team Sustainable Soil Management at Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR), part of Wageningen University & Research. His work is focused on nutrient management (recycling and emissions), and  production and use of biobased materials the production, specifically circular fertilisers from different organic 'waste' and residual flows, including manure, digestate, wastewater, urine, biowaste, etc.

Among others, present projects:
- Public Private Collaboration (PPS) project Kringloopsluiting van Nutrienten uit Afvalwater en Proceswater (KNAP) (in English: Closing nutrient cycles from waste water and process water) - http://www.wur.nl/knap
- PPS project NitriNure about valorisation of liquid and solid fractions of animal manure https://research.wur.nl/en/projects/lwv24119-nitrinure-ts-02-210-015
- PPS project BIOVALOR https://www.wur.nl/nl/onderzoek-resultaten/kennisonline-onderzoeksproje…

Finished EU projects are FERTIMANURE (www.fertimanure.eu) about on-farm manure valorisation and SYSTEMIC (www.systemicproject.eu) about valoristation of digestate from large scale anaerobic digestion plants.

Additionally he is programme secretary for the Dutch innovation programme 2E "Circularity, use and production of biobased materials' of the Topsector Agri-food Mission "Circular Agriculture" https://www.kia-landbouwwatervoedsel.nl/missie-2-land-en-tuinbouw/missi…
A roadmap for fossil-free fertilisers has been developed https://topsectoragrifood.nl/nieuws/route-en-kansenkaart-op-naar-fossie…

Before, Kimo worked for the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP, www.phosphorusplatform.eu), a platform working on nutrient stewardship by bringing together different stakeholders including governments, research institutes, industry, non-governmental organisations and farmers. Additionally, he participates in the Dutch Nutrient Platform and other nutrient networks.

Key skills: research, project management, knowledge transfer, stakeholder involvement, technology implementation, policy involvement, transition development, communication, innovation and education.
Key interests: circular economy, resource efficiency, food systems, nutrient management, recycling, (urban) sustainable agriculture, circular sanitation and wastewater systems, school gardens, sustainable communal housing.
