Biography
I have an academic background in Earth Sciences (BSc at Massey University, New Zealand) and Earth and Environment (MSc at Wageningen University, the Netherlands), with a focus on geomorphology and landscape dynamics. I have a strong interest in understanding natural landscape dynamics, and in nature conservation and restoration initiatives.
Prior to starting my PhD, I worked as a research assistant at the Netherlands Centre for Luminescence dating, and as a ranger for the Department of Conservation in New Zealand.
My PhD research focusses on carbon accumulation and storage in floodplain sediments. We approach this from various hydro-bio- geomorphic perspectives to investigate: (1) peat floodplains in lowland river systems; (2) the potential impact of beaver activity on carbon sequestration and (3) the effect of landslide sediment inputs on creating carbon storages. We aim to characterize the quantity, and physical and chemical stability, of floodplain carbon accumulated under these depositional controls to better understand river dynamics and carbon storage potential in these systems.
