prof.dr. M (Maria) Suarez Diez

Professor/Chairholder

Prof. Dr. Maria Suarez Diez is the chairholder of the Laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology at Wageningen University & Research.

Maria studied physics and obtained her PhD in Physics from the university of Oviedo in Spain. Her thesis work was on the cosmological implications of (super)string theory. Then she held post-doc positions at École Polytechnique (France), Genopole (France) and at Helmholtz-Zentrum (Germany). She then joined Wageningen University & Research and since October 2022 she heads the Laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology at Wageningen University & Research.

Maria’s research focuses on building mathematical models to understand the dynamics of cellular networks. She dreams about building a model that explains how a community of cells interact with each other as well as with their environment and how they grow together and adapt to change. This requires lots of mathematical and statistical methods and also lots of data.

Maria wishes to create an environment within the laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology where we all work together to achieve our goals, provide the best possible education and become the best possible version of ourselves.
