V (Vahdettin) Demir
Biography
Dr. Vahdettin Demir is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering specializing in water resources engineering, hydrology, hydroinformatics, and data-driven environmental modelling. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Information Technology Group, where his research focuses on the integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, geospatial technologies, and environmental data for water-related applications.
His research interests include flood and drought analysis, streamflow and water-level forecasting, groundwater and karst systems, climate-change impact assessment, GIS and remote sensing, digital twins, and intelligent decision-support systems. His methodological expertise covers machine and deep learning approaches such as ANN, SVM, LSTM, GRU and hybrid architectures, as well as metaheuristic optimization, explainable AI, and federated learning.
Dr. Demir has contributed to numerous national and international research projects and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, books, and conference proceedings. His work particularly emphasizes the development of practical, data-driven solutions for hydrological forecasting, climate-risk assessment, flood and drought management, and sustainable water-resources planning.
His current research at WUR includes real-time hydro-meteorological data integration, machine-learning-based forecasting, multi-station river discharge modelling, and privacy-preserving and federated AI approaches for environmental systems. He also actively collaborates with international researchers on interdisciplinary studies combining water science, artificial intelligence, GIS, and climate data.
In 2025, he was included in the Stanford/Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists list.
