Biography

Biography

Vassilis Sitokonstantinou is Assistant Professor in the Artificial Intelligence Group at Wageningen University & Research. His research advances causal and interpretable machine learning for Earth observation and environmental sciences. He studies how human actions, agricultural practices and climate extremes impact agroecosystems, aiming to support sustainable policies, strengthen climate resilience and ensure food security.

Before joining WUR, Vassilis was a postdoctoral researcher with Gustau Camps-Valls at the University of Valencia, where he developed causal AI methods for sustainable agriculture, food security and climate-related human displacements. Earlier, he led AgriHub at the National Observatory of Athens, building operational AI systems for climate-smart farming and EU Common Agricultural Policy monitoring.

He has contributed to several European research projects, including DeepCube, ENVISION, CALLISTO and EIFFEL, and collaborates with industry partners and policymakers to translate AI research into actionable insights. His work bridges artificial intelligence, Earth system science and sustainability, with a strong emphasis on making machine learning methods trustworthy, robust and policy-relevant.

He is an ELLIS member and reviews for AAAI, ISPRS, CVPR, IEEE GRSS, Scientific Reports and PLoS ONE.
