CGN Apiaceae Collection

The Apiaceae form a diverse plant family that includes crops cultivated worldwide for use as vegetables, spices, or medicinal plants.

This group comprises both cultivated species and their wild relatives, which are important genetic resources for breeding and research. CGN is working on building an Apiaceae collection that reflects this diversity.

The current collection includes carrot (Daucus carota), caraway (Carum carvi), coriander (Coriandrum sativum), and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare). These collections have been established relatively recently and are gradually being expanded in terms of accession numbers as well as genetic and geographic diversity. This expansion is achieved through international collecting missions and the acquisition of existing collections from other sources.

In the coming years, the Apiaceae collection will be further extended with additional important crops from this family, such as celery (Apium graveolens), parsnip (Pastinaca sativa), parsley (Petroselinum crispum), and dill (Anethum graveolens). The aim of this expansion is to safeguard genetic diversity and support future use in conservation, research, and breeding.
